In this episode of the Hanaz Writers Podcast, Charlotte, a Year 2 teacher from London, celebrates the life and work of one of the world’s best known crime and mystery authors – James Patterson. As March is his birthday month (born on 22 March 1947), this episode is a special tribute to mark the occasion.
Charlotte begins by discussing Patterson’s famous Alex Cross series, which started with Along Came a Spider. The character of Alex Cross has gone on to feature in 28 novels and even has a television adaptation available to watch on Prime Video. She also highlights other popular series written for adults such as Women’s Murder Club, Michael Bennett, Billy Harney, Jane “Effing” Smith, and Holmes, Margaret and Poe.
James Patterson is not just a writer for adults. He has written many books for younger readers and teenagers too. These include Maximum Ride, Dog Diaries, Ali Cross, Middle School, Daniel X and the Little Geniuses series.
Charlotte shares her own experience of reading Maximum Ride and how Patterson’s short chapters and ability to write from multiple characters’ points of view made the stories both fun and accessible. She encourages aspiring writers to learn from his style, especially his way of getting into his characters’ thoughts and feelings to move the story forward.
The episode ends with a warm happy birthday message to James Patterson and a thank you for his many brilliant stories.
